How To Pack Glasses When You’re Moving

21/04/17

Moving house is a daunting experience and there’s nothing worse than finding yourself in your new dream home, only to unpack and discover your treasured possessions have been damaged or destroyed in the move.

Here’s our guide on how to pack glasses when you’re moving to ensure they stay safe and sound until you’ve found the perfect spot for them.

Use the proper supplies
When packing glasses, as well as other glassware, it’s best to use medium-sized boxes. It’s always tempting to put everything in large ones, but they quickly get too heavy and awkward to move. You’ll also need lots of packing material. Bubble wrap is useful, but you can’t recycle it. Packing paper, towels, newspaper, and other materials or soft items work just as well.

Try to avoid newspapers as the black print will stain your glasses and you’ll have to wash everything on arrival.

Prepare your box

If you’re using paper (packing paper, newspaper etc.), crumble several sheets of it up and use it to cover the base of your box. The crumpled paper will provide plenty of cushioning, so your glasses will be protected in the event you knock or accidentally drop it.

Sheets and towels can also be used, just ensure you have a nice thick layer on the bottom.

Wrap your glasses

Start with your largest, heaviest glasses. Wrap them individually, folding your packing material around all the ends and edges and securing with tape if necessary. Place the heavy glasses in the bottom of your box. Continue wrapping your glasses in size order and adding them to the box in layers.

Don’t fill your box all the way to the top. Leave a good space and fill it with extra packing material, creating a cushioning layer as you did for the bottom.

Check your box

Before sealing it up, give your box a gentle shake to check the contents don’t move around too much or make any noise. If you can hear glass clinking, you’ve not used enough packing material. Once you’re satisfied, securely tape the box shut. Be sure to label it as fragile on each side and indicate which way up it goes, so the heavy glasses remain on the bottom.
