Tips on packing your valuable book collection when moving home

Make sure that the boxes aren’t too big; books can weigh very heavily, and if you put too many books in one box, you’ll find it difficult to lift and move them. It’s important that your boxes of packed books remain closed so that they don’t get knocked about and torn. Get some strong, brown parcel tape for this job from the post office.

Old rags are very useful for packing around the corners of hardback books that could be dented during transit. You will also need some packing paper, labels, and a marker pen.

If you’re moving home in the winter or the wet season, it’s a good idea to have a roll or two of plastic wrap to keep your boxes waterproof.

How To Pack Books

Begin by lining the box with packing paper to protect the sleeves of hardbacks and prevent paperbacks from getting scratched.

Put the biggest heaviest books in first, placing them flat. Don’t stand the books up, as this will place undue strain on the box base and on other boxes stacked beneath. Leave a few centimetres free at the top of each box and fill the space with rags. This prevents the top layer of books from being damaged if other boxes are placed on top.

Use plenty of packing tape to secure the top of your boxes, and also the seam across the bottom. It’s a good idea to wrap several layers of tape around the boxes for extra security.

Label your boxes clearly so that the removalists know to put the heaviest boxes on the bottom of the pile when loading their van.
